Until spring 2025, a UK online slot could take a stake of £50, £100 or more per spin, depending on the game. Land-based machines had long had stake caps. Online slots did not. That has now changed. Every online slot offered to British players by a Gambling Commission licensee has a maximum stake. The cap is lower for younger adults, and it applies to a game cycle, not to a "spin" in the everyday sense.

The limits and when they started
| Who | Maximum stake per game cycle | In force from |
|---|---|---|
| Players aged 25 and over | £5 | 9 April 2025 |
| Players aged 18 to 24 | £2 | 21 May 2025 |
The limits come from the Gambling Commission and apply to online slot games offered by its licensees to customers in Great Britain. The Commission's guidance for operators sets out how they apply. The source is listed at the end of this article.
What a game cycle is
A game cycle runs from the moment a stake is placed to the moment the outcome of that stake is settled. Everything that one stake pays for belongs to the same cycle. That has some practical effects:
- The cap is on what you put in, not what you win. A £5 stake can still produce a large win.
- A feature triggered by the stake is part of the same cycle. Free spins or a bonus round won from a £5 stake don't count as new stakes.
- The limit is on the cycle, not on a line. It covers the stake for the game cycle as a whole, so a game played across many lines or ways is capped by its total stake per cycle.
How the £2 limit is applied
UK licensed operators must verify a customer's age before they can gamble. So the operator knows the date of birth before the first stake. Customers aged 18 to 24 get slots with stake options capped at £2. Once a customer turns 25, the £5 cap applies. If you are under 25 and see a stake option above £2, the game is not set up as the rules require.
What players notice
For most players the cap changes nothing. Typical stakes in UK online slots are well under £2. The difference shows up in three places:
- High-stake bonus terms. Bonus terms often set their own maximum bet while a bonus is being wagered. That term still applies alongside the stake limit, and the lower of the two is the one that binds.
- Jackpot slots. Some progressive slots pay their top prize only at the highest stake level. With the cap, the highest level for UK players is at most £5, or £2 for 18–24s.
- Time, not stake, now drives the cost of a session. At £5 a cycle, the cost of an hour depends on how many cycles you play. UK rules also set a minimum time per cycle. Our guide to the 2.5-second rule shows what an hour of play can turn over.
Other rules that sit alongside the cap
The stake limit adds to the online game design rules that have applied since 31 October 2021. These rules set a minimum game cycle of 2.5 seconds, ban autoplay and features that speed up play, and stop wins worth less than the stake being celebrated as wins. Since 31 October 2025, a request to raise a deposit limit must wait at least 24 hours and be confirmed. See raising a deposit limit. Bonus wagering is capped at 10 times from 19 January 2026. See the 10x wagering cap.
